Life to the full, after the pool!

This is our baptism teaching by Alex Lyne. Recorded live at our 9.30 baptism service in Harris Academy Purley, Croydon on Sunday 25th October, 2026.

Talk Summary - Life to the Full After the Pool

There is something wonderfully joyful about a baptism Sunday. The water is ready, friends and family gather, and the room is full of expectation. But the most exciting thing about baptism isn't what happens in the pool. It's what comes after it.

Throughout the Bible, water is rarely just water. It represents chaos, danger and the unknown. In the opening verses of Genesis, darkness covers the deep waters. Yet again and again, God leads people not simply into the water, but through it — towards something new.

Noah emerges from the flood to receive God's promise of faithfulness. Moses leads an enslaved people through the Red Sea into freedom. Jonah is swallowed by the deep and given another chance to respond to God's call. Each story tells us something about a God who brings new life out of places that seem like endings.

And then comes Jesus.

At his baptism, Jesus rises from the water and the Holy Spirit descends on him, as the Father declares his love. Later, Jesus enters something far deeper than a river: death itself. Crucified and buried, he rises again three days later, opening the way to life that even death cannot overcome.

This is the heart of Christian baptism. We don't come to the water because we've got everything sorted. We bring our weaknesses, failures, regrets and sin. Baptism is an outward sign of an inward reality: that in Jesus, the old life can be left behind and something new can begin.

And that new life isn't merely a promise of heaven one day. It's an invitation for today.

Jesus offers freedom from the things that hold us captive. He promises his presence in the storms we face. He gives his Holy Spirit to comfort, equip and empower ordinary people to live extraordinary lives.

The Christian faith is not simply about having a better ending to our story, but about discovering a different way to live right now.

The pool is a beautiful moment. But it isn't the destination.

There is life to the full after the pool — and that life is found in Jesus.
